Blog: Buster Brown

Ever since Spring has opened up on us, I have been thinking about putting bird feeders out in front of my office window. Shannon bought me some remote-controlled candles that flicker and so at night, I have them on my window ledge but during the day, it’s nice to have outside light coming in.

My office is wonderful at night but, during the day, there was just something missing.

I have imagined all kinds of colorful little birds that would come and rest and sit in a “Snow White esque” scene, but I have one problem, I have no shade from the direct sunlight for them. Yesterday morning I threw open the blinds and to my surprise I found a big fuzzy gray tail and a little tiny gray face staring back at me from one of the ‘bird’ feeders.

Oh boy, I have a squirrel.

During the course of the day yesterday I just did my thing and so did he. He would come over and fill his face with the seeds that I had set out, and then he would run away, be gone for several minutes and slowly, he would creep back through the grass to the feeder and jump triumphantly on it, looking at me like he had just bested me. After a while, it became comical.

You see, I was gonna shoo him away but after thinking about it, I decided to let him stay. I thought to myself, he’s got as much right to be here as I do and well, I wanted wildlife!

I think I’m going to name him Buster Brown; there’s a long story with that for another time. As for Buster Brown and I, we seem to be getting along quite well. He’s even come up and tapped on my screen once or twice. For now, I will enjoy my view with my new friend who is eating me out of ‘bird’ seed. I guess this week, ‘bird’ seed is how I make my mark.

Now, go make your mark.
